But I kept it up because I loved it, and I won some competitions. I weighed up all the circumstances in my life at the time. But I am also very aware how fortunate I am to be doing something that I am absolutely passionate about. Once you get past his imposing cm physique and undeniably good looks, Rhodes comes across as very unassuming, modest and rather self-effacing. From there, they see you do one and suddenly you are recognised as being able to do new music, so it has its own ride.

I think it happens across the board. Followed categories will be added to My News. The pair have been consistently cryptic about their relationship, which was sparked three years ago when they sizzled on stage together in South Pacific.

Opera Australia artistic director Lyndon Terracini sees this texture in Tahu Rhodes' on-stage performances as well, adding nuance to his physicality.

As a boy in New Zealand, Tahu Rhodes' exceptional singing was identified early on, and he was a star of the school choir. His talent appeared to come out of the blue - there are no other professional musicians in his family - and he had no knowledge of opera before he began to sing it.

But while he loved singing, performance was not a natural fit with Teddy, a shy boy who struggled with self-consciousness on stage. While Tahu Rhodes was not yet able to trust in his talent, others did, and he became a member of the New Zealand Youth Choir, winning competitions for his singing.

Perhaps, too, there was an element of waiting for Tahu Rhodes to make the most of his gift. As a teenager, he worked each summer on his cousin David's farm, about an hour out of Christchurch. Driving around the farm in a ute, David would play classical music, much to Teddy's irritation. Tahu Rhodes vividly recalls one day when he was 15, when in response to his complaints about the music David turned to him and said, somewhat presciently: ''You'll come to appreciate this music one day.

When he finished school, Tahu Rhodes completed a commerce degree while still singing on the side, and in the process almost sabotaged the opportunity to make a career of it.

He loved to sing, but the performance aspect was still troubling him. He says he was considered ''wooden'' as an actor, and was overwhelmed by the idea of performing to people in the audience who knew him. Tenor David Hobson, with whom Tahu Rhodes has formed a highly successful recording relationship, says this performance anxiety is not unusual in opera. So Tahu Rhodes went on to become an accountant, all the while resisting entreaties to join the opera world. After six years in commerce, and having just taken a job with a law firm, Tahu Rhodes was given another chance to come to Australia to perform.

With it came the ultimatum he clearly needed: tenor Christopher Doig, his close friend and mentor who died last year from cancer, told him this was his last chance. You're never going to get asked again and we're not going to push you any more'. So at 31, Tahu Rhodes resigned from his law firm job and took the role in Australia, giving himself five years to make a success of his singing.

He has no doubt now that it was the right move.
